"The Wealth of Some and the Ruin of Others"
Shelley Miller
Salvador, Brazil, November 2008.
"This mural, which first appears to be a ceramic tile azulejo, is completely made from sugar. It was installed on a public wall in the Brazilian city of Salvador, in conjunction with a solo exhibition at the Pierre Verger Gallery.
This work addresses the history of the sugar industry in Brazil and its links to colonization and slavery. Its gradual demise illustrates the contrast between those who profited from the sugar trade, and those who suffered as a result. This temporary mural lasted for nearly 3 weeks."
